The Towanda Area School District hosted a wellness in-service day program for all employees on Wednesday, June 10, 2009. The program was held at the high school. All employees met in the auditorium to be welcomed by superintendent, Diane Place and followed by a presentation regarding the Venture Grants through the TASD Foundation. Employees are afforded to donated funds to this project through payroll deduction. Jamie Wecker and Sarah Adams serve as the teacher liaisons for the two levels, high school and elementary, on behalf of the TASD Foundation. They encouraged employees to contribute to the Venture /grant fund. A lottery has been established for persons who give to the /foundation and Venture Grants. For every dollar an employee contributes his or her name will be entered into a lottery. The winners will receive $ 100 for his or her classroom if the winner is a teacher. If a support staff person wins he or she may donate the $ 100 to any student related activity in the district. Employees selected their first, second and third choices of wellness workshops. Art Club students have been making Japanese hand bound journals this past spring. They had made extras and decided they would like to have our soldiers distribute them to children in Afghanistan or Iraq.
We are working with the organization "Soldier's Angels - SOS Kids." Their mission is to reach out to meet some of the needs of people in these war-torn areas. The children need food, clothing, school supplies and personal hygiene items. The occasional toy or treat puts a huge smile on a child's face. Our soldiers can also establish all-important good relations with people they are living near and working with - developing the friendship, trust and intelligence sources that help keep our troops safe and secure in the areas in which they are based.
Students involved in this project include:
Fifth grade: Courtney Locke, Nichole Saxon, Victoria Gowin, Rebecca Ferrulli, Elizabeth Bartholomew, Ali Butler, Anna Fink and Anastasiya Andriyash
Sixth Grade: Kira Shanks, Jessica Pavey, Shaina Vanderveer, Kaitlyn West and Kayla Brown |
