Mr. Henty is hosting a Japanese high school student this year as part of his Japanese language program. Her name is Natsuki Kagiya (Naht-ski / Kah-giy-ya). She comes from a rural area of Gifu prefecture in Japan. Besides taking classes with the sophomore class, she will be helping students in Japanese classes to work on their language skills. She's already found that she is welcome in Pennsylvania and we looking forward to making friends with her. |

In May, the Holocaust Literature class had two opportunities to learn about the events of the Holocaust through the personal stories, photographs, images and objects of those who experienced it firsthand.
First, the class participated in the 22nd Annual Teen Symposium on the Holocaust sponsored by the Scranton Holocaust Resource Center and the Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Students were able to hear first-person testimony from survivors of the Holocaust and liberator Alan Moskin, former Staff Sergeant in the 66th Infantry in General George Patton's 3rd Army. In addition, they viewed We Must Remember, a new documentary film produced by a California High School English class.
Second, students travelled to Washington D.C. to tour exhibits at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. A highlight of the experience was listening to Holocaust survivor, Bob Behr. Students viewed exhibits in Daniel's Story, the Permanent Exhibition, and State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda. Coupled with the look at the past, students appreciated the freedoms in our country through visits to the United States Capitol Building, White House, and other national landmarks.
The trip was made possible by generous donations from the Towanda Area School District Education Foundation Venture Grant, Towanda Area Education Association, and the Pennsylvania Holocaust Education Council. |

Tenth grade English classes have recently raised money for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in honor of Curt W. Stradley. The project was inspired after reading Eric, a book written by Doris Lund about her son's battle with cancer.
The class donated ingredients, prepared product, wrote advertisements, and sold trail mix called, "Trail of Hope." Altogether the class raised $272, which will be doubled by an anonymous donor at the hospital. In addition, the class donated surplus ingredient items to the Towanda Area Christian Outreach food pantry.
The class wishes to thank the school community for its participation and generosity. They offer a special thank you to Mrs. Adams fourth grade class which partnered with the high school to market "Trail of Hope." |
